Fool for Love

MITCH LILLIE
8 pm Thursdays-Saturdays, 2 pm Sundays through April 21., Thursday April 18 | $12.
The Back Door Theater
4319 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Both The Jerry Springer Show and Maury date to 1991, eight years after Sam Shepard’s seminal play Fool for Love was first performed in San Francisco. Shepard, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, anticipated the weirdness, revenge-taking and familial drama of those shows, though with more style and humor than both Springer and Maury combined. Asae Dean’s production pulls off the classic nearly flawlessly. Eddie (Arthur Delaney) travels 2,000 miles for an unannounced visit to his former squeeze May (Jenny Newbry Waters), and it’s clear from May’s shrieking accusations that Eddie has done more than his fair share of cheating and heartbreaking. Both are batshit crazy as they argue. May kisses Eddie for a second and then knees him in the balls. Their passion belies a taboo background neither wants to face, while the Old Man (Brian MacEwan) waits in the wings and delivers lines a bit over-enunciated for the honky-tonk atmosphere. May’s date, Martin (Tommy Harrington), suddenly arrives, and his simpleton responses to Eddie’s provocations are the production’s finest hour. Instead of a tension-melting double suicide, these powerful characters hang their secrets out to dry and stand resolute.
