[PSYTRANCE PLUS] Infected Mushroom’s first three albums—The Gathering, Classical Mushroom and B.P. Empire—are classic examples of the bass-heavy, fast and freaky dance music known as “psytrance.” The tirelessly touring Israeli duo made a name for themselves as DJs across the world in just a few years after dropping their 1999 debut. But in 2003, something changed, and it’s not hard to see by the name of the album released that year. Converting Vegetarians is a two-disc set, the first of which is filled with the rapidly throbbing trance fans expected. The second disc is full of odd, ambient, poppy music, putting it in the tradition of Lil Wayne’s Rebirth in terms of an established artist attempting to quickly switch genres while keeping the same musical tools. But unlike Weezy, they didn’t back down. IM the Supervisor, released a year later, explores electronica, live instrumentation and rock-style vocals, and does it well. Since then, Infected Mushroom has continued to alternately explore new genres and stick to what it knows. In the end, the only thing worse than trance DJs experimenting is trance DJs repeating the same lazy formula ad nauseum.
