[MUSTACHIOED COUNTRY] The fact that Denver, Colo., is more than 1,200 miles away from Portland hasn’t stopped the up-and-coming sextet from performing under the Mile High City’s name at home. The twangy outfit, featuring a rotating lineup of some of Stumptown’s finest boot-stompin’ fellows, is more than just a sum of its members’ country influences and backroad shenanigans. Denver’s self-titled debut album pitches sweet, all-American harmonies next to Scruggs-esque banjo, honky-tonk guitar and some old-fashioned walking baselines. Chief songwriters Birger Olsen, Mike Elias and Tom Bevitori don’t write songs about blue jeans and John Deere, they write them about being lonesome and homesick—just the way country was meant to sound.
