[BITTERSWEET FOLK] For the most part, the Milk Carton Kids’ debut album, The Ash & Clay, is a simple, no-frills Americana experience. Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale sing subtly yet richly about life’s hardships, usually without a lot of fanfare, though at times they will juxtapose serious content with upbeat acoustic guitars. The duo’s voices intertwine in a style reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, but such nods to the past are brief and do not ring hollow. Ryan and Pattengale also score points for making songs that are contemplative and thought-provoking without being manipulative or judgmental. This is some classic folk music here.
