[CULT JAMBOREE] After growing from oddity to full-blown stars in the years since 2007’s Up From Below, L.A.’s Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes have finally begun to storm stages big enough to match frontman Alex Ebert’s ego. But lest you think the hippie-dippie superheroes were one-trick ponies, the group came out of left field with last year’s Here. The record takes a different approach to the established sound of rollicking sing-alongs. Here is a stripped-down showcase of the band’s gospel side, with backup singer Jade Castrinos taking a larger role on tracks that feel more like prayer circles than revivalist jamborees. The band’s persona is that of a space cult, and you’re well advised to keep drinking the Kool-Aid.
