Aziza, Issam Houshan

BRETT CAMPBELL
8 pm., Saturday July 20 | $20 advance, $25 day of show. Under 21 permitted with legal guardian.
Alberta Rose Theatre
3000 NE Alberta St.

[MIDDLE EASTERN] Although bellies will be bouncing onstage, you could close your eyes and still get your money’s worth from the live Arabic music ensemble of musicians from Egypt (nai flute player Michael Naguib), Syria (master percussionist Issam Houshan) and the Americas (local Middle Eastern band Ritim Egzotik). They’ll be playing music by some of the 20th century’s most renowned Arab composers, including Wahab, Hafez and Kalthoum. And if you keep your eyes open, you’ll see former Portlander Aziza, who ruled the scene here in the ’90s before moving to Montreal and going international—plus, other top Northwest belly dancers, bobbing and shimmying.
