Joseph Harrington: Landscape Portraits

RICHARD SPEER
Thursday August 08

What do New Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, and the southwest of England have in common? They’re all inspirations for artist Joseph Harrington’s new sculptures, titled Landscape Portraits. Harrington uses a novel technique to evoke the landscapes in those locales. He begins with a block of ice, then rubs salt on certain parts, selectively hastening the melting process and imbuing the surface with nubby textures. He then casts the block into a mold, from which a kiln-formed glass sculpture ultimately emerges. The sculptures alternate between smooth and gritty surfaces, transparency and opacity, leading to startling formal and thematic juxtapositions. Through Aug. 31.
