[ROUGH CUT LO-FI] Sometimes a record’s art describes the band perfectly. Jackson Scott’s album, Melbourne, features a blown-out, sepia-toned photo of children around a table at what appears to be a birthday party. The kids are fascinated by the attention of the lens—uncomfortable, even. Such is the North Carolinian’s music: off-kilter, squirmish and under-developed. Scott sings about loneliness in his childlike, sometimes androgynous voice. The guitar work is abstract and gently radiating. Overall, Scott’s music is fascinating, in that it makes you feel nostalgic for childhood, when it was acceptable to be openly strange. Tonight marks the eve of his tour with Portland psychedelic revivalists Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
