[MODERN AMERICANA] Matthew Houck’s Phosphorescent has spent the better part of the new millennium turning over the well-worn ground of country and folk music, offering only a few surprises along the way. For his latest album, Muchacho—released earlier this year on Dead OceansHouck started exploring new ground, using krautrock-style keyboard textures and other frissons of electronic fun, as well as richer ’60s pop-inspired arrangements. The resulting songs are some of his most exciting, thrilling with even his most straight-up country ramblers as he laments a “New Anhedonia” and the “Quotidian Beasts” that lie within.
