Growing up as a black adolescent in a neglected neighborhood of the overwhelmingly white city of Portland, Mitchell Jackson came of age in the ’90s in a community struggling with a scourge of crack cocaine. His new autobiographical novel, The Residue Years, is told from the alternating perspectives of a mother trying to get clean and a son who has no other way to support his family than to sell the drugs plaguing them.
