Kronos Quartet

BRETT CAMPBELL
7:30 pm., Wednesday October 09 | $5-$47.
Kaul Auditorium at Reed College
3203 SE Woodstock Blvd.

[TOMORROW’S CLASSICS] Rebels turned role models, Kronos Quartet has, over the past four decades, become a beacon for classically trained musicians who cultivate and perform new music. Shedding the tuxedos and other anachronisms, Kronos merely does what would be unremarkable in the pop music world but is somehow still novel in classical music: seek and perform fascinating music of our own time, via collaborations with everyone from Tom Waits to David Bowie and Obo Addy. This time, the characteristically diverse lineup includes music by the Vietnamese composer Kim Sinh, Serbia’s Aleksandra Vrebalov (a frequent collaborator), venerable Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov and even (for them) an oldie: Ken Benshoof’s Traveling Music, which sounds as fresh as it did when Kronos commissioned it 30 years ago.
