Soul Ipsum, Moon Mirror, Kevin Rain

MITCH LILLIE
9 pm., Friday October 25 | Free.
Kenton Club
2025 N Kilpatrick St.

[POOF!] It’s difficult to describe music, and very easy to tack a “core” or a “hop” suffix onto an established style, fold your arms and blink Jeannie-style as the genre—not the musician—becomes the multihyphenate, goes viral and dies. Case in point: vaporware. Portland’s Soul Ipsum is one artist who punches through stuffy labels with self-awareness and humor, not to mention beats and melodies seemingly shaken with champagne and ice. Botanicals, Soul Ipsum’s debut, is just as ethereal as the rest of the scene, but it takes more risks and is rewarded in kind: It’s vapor’s silver lining.
