[STONER SURF ROCK] There’s nothing cooler in the music world at the moment than the messy, stoner-centric garage rock coming out of California’s Burger Records. And San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls are fine representatives of the label’s sound. Scratchy, surf-y rock demons with a passion for psychedelic harmonizing and cheap beer, it’s no surprise their catchiest track, “Hot Summer,” is featured on Polyvinyl Record’s heavily buzzed I Need You Bad compilation, a summary of the Bay Area garage scene put together by Sonny Smith of Sonny and the Sunsets. Fellow Burger band, the Memories, Portland drunk-punk with a sensitive side, accompanies the Ghouls, rounding out a perfectly scuzzy and endearing lineup.
