[TEJAS BALLADEER] It’s been a couple decades since the San Antonio-born singer-songwriter Tish Hinojosa sprang from Austin’s fertile music scene singing poignant, radio-friendly country-folk tunes with a siren voice as clear as Barton Springs used to be. Hinojosa could even make deftly observed tales about politically tinged subjects like immigration and pollution hooky and narratively engaging, perfect for fans of Alison Krauss, Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Emmylou Harris. After spending the last decade living in Germany, Hinojosa moved back to Austin this summer, and released her 15th album, the pop-inflected After the Fair, which bears musical and lyrical traces of her European sojourn. There are Spanish covers of Woody Guthrie (“Deportee”) and Paul McCartney songs and sometimes melancholy, sometimes spirited originals that sound as sweet as ever, in any language.
