David Price: On the Horizon

The eternal enigma of the horizon serves as a point of departure, a literal line of orientation, for many artists who show at Butters Gallery, among them Ted Katz and, in works such as Golden Dusk and Lake Louise III, Debra van Tuinen. This month, in his second solo show, Whidbey Island painter David Price adds his own two cents (possibly three) to this time-honored trope. In encaustic paintings on wood panel, Price juxtaposes the earthen world below with the vaporous cerulean vault above in elemental, if formulaic, paeans to the horizon. Works such as Sage Wash, San Juan Patina and Patinated Columbia gently intertwine landscape and skyscape, with the occasional suggestion of seascape. Price seems to take his naturalistic idylls with a shot of dry-vermouth humor, however. As he writes about his quasi-transcendentalist tomes: “Sometimes I just feel like creating something orange.” Through Dec. 21.
