The Prids, Daydream Machine, Tender Age

MICHAEL MANNHEIMER
9 pm., Friday January 17 | $8 advance, $10 day of show.
Doug Fir Lounge
830 E Burnside St.

[LET ENGLAND SHAKE] For a band with a self-professed list of shoegaze and dream-pop references, the Prids’ music is alarmingly charming. While a legion of British-worshiping guitar bands seem to ape the dour side of the U.K. music scene (it sure is gray in Manchester, y’know?), the Portland quartet blends squalls of distortion and a recognizable post-punk low end with rays of sunshine on songs like “Break” and “The Problem.” This is a band that can credibly cover Guided by Voices (the slow-moving and intense version of “Motor Away” almost beats the original) and ask for guest spots from Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch, so the fact it is often left out of the conversation about this city’s best bands is an absolute crime.
