Leonard Ruder: Paintings

RICHARD SPEER
Saturday January 11
Augen DeSoto
716 NW Davis St.

Leonard Ruder (1917-2010) worked as a school custodian by day but at night was a prolific painter. He rarely exhibited his work, but this posthumous show proves that his paintings from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s were the equal of many painters’ of much greater renown. In the bravura painting titled Rectangles, he traversed a continuum of yellow tones from sunflower to mustard to lemon to canary. Slathering oil paints in architectonic wedges, he used palette knives to create luscious textures. Through Feb. 1.
