[AMERICANA] It’s been the songs, all along, that have distinguished Railroad Earth from the jam-packed jam pack. Its latest album, Last of the Outlaws, delivers another solid batch from the guitar and pen of Todd Sheaffer, blending Americana and Celtic influences while skirting those genres’ cliches. The album’s centerpiece, a six-part, 21-minute epic called “All That’s Dead May Live Again/Face With a Hole” lives up to its ambition with a shifting, dynamic arrangement that has a listener trying to peer around the next corner, wondering what direction the expansive piece will take next. The eight other songs that surround the suite demonstrate further range, with an equal measure of heart and soul.
