Buffy! A Parody Play
7 pm Thursdays-Saturdays through March 29., Saturday March 15 | $12-$18.
If the smell of county-fair corn dogs isn’t a dead giveaway, then consider this fair warning: Buffy! A Parody Play
is not a highbrow evening at the thea-tah. This Funhouse Lounge production is more like an R-rated carnival ride funded by Mel Brooks on food stamps. Whereas the original 1992 film could never quite tell whether it was playing the joke on itself, this version takes the inherent corniness to town, crowns it and proclaims it king. Punches are met with mistimed “pow” sound effects, like an audible comic book. Gymnastics are replaced with stagehands flipping cardboard cutouts of the actors. In this case, self-awareness is certainly a boon. Landy Steckman’s turn as Buffy comes with the perfect amount of valley-girl cheese, stuffed with enough shrill lines like “That’s so fetch!” and “As if!” to fill Venice Beach. If only the parody portion of the play were similarly robust. With just a few ad-libs and a Twilight
reference to distance itself from the original screenplay, Buffy! A Director’s Cut
might have been a more appropriate title. But to complain that this parody lacks originality is like bemoaning a corn dog for being too greasy.
