Stumpfest: YOB, Black Cobra, Diesto, Drunk Dad, Honduran

PETE COTTELL

Mississippi Studios

[OREGON METAL] Since 2003’s Catharsis, Eugene’s YOB has functioned as a sample platter for all things heavy and Northwestern. Hypnotic, effects-heavy guitar parts are set adrift in a shallow sea of psychedelics, bobbing up and down until a wave of sludge swallows everything whole. With four other bands on the bill, it’s not likely YOB will get to tear through more than four “songs,” but the conventions of composition are eschewed in favor of movements and colors rather than verses and choruses. Bi-coastal doomcore duo Black Cobra brings a hastened approach to the drop-tuned riffage and pummeling rhythms of the sludgy timbre that’s uniform on the last night of Stumpfest.
