[BATTLE JAZZ] Too many modern jazz shows are crowded with intricate arrangements and half-baked Beatles covers. The solution, or part of it: Melissa Aldana's Crash Trio, a band that's not afraid to just dig in and play. Aldana's a Chilean-born saxophonist with a fat, fluffy tone and blistering technique that grabbed her the top prize at the 2013 Thelonious Monk Competition. She's joined by fellow Chilean Pablo Menares on bass and Cuban Francisco Mela on drums, but even with its international pedigree, the band keeps hard-driving swing on heavy rotation. This is jazz at its most alive—and its most combustible.
