People always say to stop looking for love and it will find you. Love’s Labour’s Lost, one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, takes this idea as scripture. The play follows the King of Navarre and his three friends, who swear off women to focus on their studies—and then, of course, become entirely infatuated with a visiting princess and her three maids. In Post5’s characteristically modern spin, iPhones make an appearance throughout, and Holoferne’s monologue about love has become a beatboxed rap song. Still, as directed by Avital Shira, this production sticks close to the original territory. With only a minimal set in the outdoor courtyard of Milepost 5 (bring a blanket or chair if you don’t want to sit on the grass), all attention turns to the characters, a choice that works well with such a likable cast. Jim Vadala offers a memorable performance as the king’s friend Berowne, wryly criticizing his compatriots for falling in love so easily—before quickly becoming a vulnerable, ukulele-strumming romantic himself. He and his sassy counterpart, Rosaline (Jessica Tidd), make lovely banter, but Danielle Frimer as the princess steals scenes with her sharp-tongued quips and subtle touches of sadness and amusement as she goes from feigning affection for the king to feeling sincere love. Though it’s one of Shakespeare’s flatter plays—none of the characters evolves enough to feel truly interesting—the cast works well together, making for a breezy, mildly absurd riff on being a fool in love.
