Summer can be a bleak time for theater—it's all Shakespeare in the parks and old chestnuts in the suburbs. Portland Center Stage's annual JAW festival is a much-needed antidote, offering an actual reason to go inside on a sunny afternoon. The micro-fest features staged readings of brand-spankin' new works by four playwrights from across the country. Since the fest launched in 1999, many of the featured plays (and playwrights) have gone on to big things. Up this year: a play by Penny Penniston about a pastor who commissions a mural by a lesbian atheist; Tommy Smith's take on the myth of plane hijacker D.B. Cooper; a work by Mat Smart set on a research station in Antarctica; and a commission by Adam Bock, whose work is familiar to PCS patrons. Also: performances featuring Chinese instruments, marionettes and pole dancers (sadly, however, not all at once). Oh, and it's all free. You can go back outside next weekend.
