[PSYCH-FUNK] Daptone Records' Budos Band proclaims a new beginning on the forthcoming Burnt Offering. While the funk outfit might intend the endeavor to come off as a stylistic left turn, the ensemble has moved from aping 1970s blaxploitation soundtracks to sounding like a band snapped off one of those Afro-funk compilations. It’s not a bad move—and it suits Budos Band well. “The Sticks,” a track off the forthcoming album, gets a bit more twisted than the average funk workout, but stays well within the genre’s boundaries. It’s not revelatory, but the slight development enables the band to bring something new on tour after a four-year recording drought.
