Dan Deacon, Phone Call, Hustle & Drone
3939 N Mississippi Ave.
[MAXIMAL MIDI MASTERPIECES] Behind the pitch-bent vocals and Woody Woodpecker samples, Dan Deacon happens to be the most sincere dude ever. If it’s not obvious on 2012’s America—a sprawling 8-bit odyssey about the Land of the Brave—his ebullience will literally smack you in the face if you embark on the experience of seeing the portly Baltimorean and his tangle of neon MIDI devices live. Pundits have dubbed his participatory performance art something along the lines of “hipster aerobics,” which would only be accurate if your garden variety hipster weren’t too cool to go on a Pop Rocks bender and dance like a whirling dervish while the Technicolor sound of melting computers explodes around you. “No cowards allowed!” he’ll yell as he forces you to lock arms with your neighbor and flail in circles like the world was ending tomorrow. If it is, burning off endorphins at a Dan Deacon show is a fine way prepare for the end.
