[HIGH-SPEED JAZZ] Snootier critics have been hard on Eldar Djangirov. Initially, as a fresh-faced 10-year-old immigrant from Kyrgyzstan, he was greeted with fanfare, and he was signed to Sony at age 17. As he moved into his 20s, though, the prodigy’s star dimmed, and he was accused of being nothing but a piano-playing robot who regurgitated Oscar Peterson licks at breakneck speeds. While it’s certainly no secret that Djangirov can play very, very fast, he’s also found his own sound: His latest albums are full of breezy compositions that show the virtuoso’s delicate side.
