Jason Brown and Chris Haberman: Best Song Ever

RICHARD SPEER
Friday August 15
Goodfoot Lounge

It makes sense that longtime curators and painters Jason Brown and Chris Haberman would call their two-artist show Best Songs Ever. The pair, who co-curate the Peoples Art of Portland gallery in Pioneer Place Mall, have styles that are in some ways similar, but just dissimilar enough to create that blend of harmony and creative friction that distinguished the great songwriting duos of the 20th century: George and Ira Gershwin, Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel. Brown and Haberman transliterate some classic songs into paintings, including Velvet Underground’s “Heroin” and Queen’s “Killer Queen.” At their opening, in keeping with the theme, viewers dressed as their favorite rock stars. Some pieces in the show are collaborations; others aren’t. Since 2000, Brown has been curating visual-art shows at the Goodfoot, where he’s seen hundreds, if not thousands, of bands. A sense of musical rhythm informs his and Haberman’s whimsically ironic artworks, which often incorporate text and recycled objects. Through Aug. 26.
