James Lavadour: Fingering Instabilities

RICHARD SPEER
Saturday August 16

Good news for Umatilla superstar painter James Lavadour. It’s just been announced that he'll be included in a mega-exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art. Granted, the Bentonville, Ark., museum—founded by the Walton family (of Wal-Mart infamy)—is no Museum of Modern Art. But its curatorial program is no slouch, either. This news follows Lavadour’s inclusion in last year’s Venice Biennale, an international exposition of considerable clout. On the heels of these two developments, Lavadour is having a solo show at his longtime Portland gallery, PDX Contemporary Art. With their luscious gestures and eye-searing colors, his paintings finesse the lines between landscape and abstraction. And if his work is beginning to seem formulaic to those of us who’ve followed it for a long time, it still holds the power to make people who’ve never encountered it before go, “Wow!” Through Aug. 30.
