Split between post-soviet Georgia and liberal San Francisco, Christina Nichol's debut novel Waiting for the Electricity finds maritime lawyer Slims Achmed Makashvili trying to escape what he sees as a grim existence in his home country through an internship program in America. But life in the US is not what Slims expected it to be in Nichol's imaginative satire.
