[RELEVANT COMMENTARY] Even if Blackalicious—the East Bay rap troupe comprising MC Gift of Gab and producer Chief Xcel—hasn’t issued a new album since 2005’s The Craft, it has enough material from its three long-players to come up with a pretty gripping set. “Deception,” from the group’s 1999 debut, works as hip-hop history, pointing out the pratfalls of success. Blazing Arrows’ title track from three years later qualifies as one of the duo’s most boastful battle raps. And “Black Diamonds and Pearls” provides still-relevant social and political commentary seven years after release. That last bit is perhaps unfortunate, but it also points to the cerebral nature of Gab’s writing.
