Jeremy Rotsztain: Digital Gestures

Thursday August 28
2505 SE 11th Ave., Suite 104
In 1985, using an Amiga computer program, Andy Warhol famously drew a portrait of Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry on live television. Nearly three decades later, it’s an open question whether computers have ultimately helped or hindered the cause of fine art. Local artist Jeremy Rotsztain takes up the question anew in Digital Gestures. Using up-to-the-minute software, he creates gestural abstractions in the piece Swiping, a transmogrification of marks made on an iPad. In the works Action Painting and Obsession, he turns images from Hollywood films and the Internet into compositions that appear to explode into three-dimensional space. Can digital interfaces ever prove as “authentic” as the spontaneous painterly gestures of a Jackson Pollock or Sam Francis? Probably not, but Rotsztain has a lot of fun trying. Through Sept. 26.
