Bennet Norrbo: Nice & Naughty

Beloved Portland artist Bennet Norrbo died last year at 83. A year later, his friend and artistic executor, gallerist Marilyn Murdoch, is mounting an affectionate retrospective of his work, spanning many media and decades, and including pieces never seen before by the public. Half the proceeds from the sale will benefit P:ear, a local nonprofit that offers art-centered therapies to homeless and transitional youth. Norrbo was famously eccentric (he never left the house without $500 in cash and a stash of airplane liquor bottles in his pockets) and was too shy to attend his own art openings. He painted in two styles, the first under his real name (brightly colored images of Portland landmarks and personalities), the second under the pseudonym Joe Hatt (grittier depictions of prostitutes and gangsters). This retrospective offers a comprehensive overview of an artist who is overdue for a thorough reconsideration. Aug. 30-Nov. 30.
