Joe Manis Trio, Mel Brown Septet

BRETT CAMPBELL
6:30 pm Tuesday, Sept. 2., Tuesday September 02 | $6. Under 21 permitted until 9:30 pm.
Jimmy Mak's
221 NW 10th Ave.

[JAZZ] Eugene-based Joe Manis was already one of Oregon's top tenor saxmen, capable of holding the floor with big, fluid solos in the great post-bop sax trio tradition. Then he hooked up with recent New York import George Colligan, the keyboard master who's worked with stars from Don Byron to Jack DeJohnette to Michael Brecker, and who now teaches at Portland State. Adding Colligan's B-3 to his trio provoked an enjoyably incendiary chemical reaction on their 2013 album North by Northwest, with the two soloists inspiring each other to ever more daring flights, mostly in the classic style. Drummer Todd Strait will fan the flames. The ticket includes admission to Mel Brown's weekly septet jam, which is always worth the price by itself.
