[ATMOSPHERIC SURF-POP] Recorded over two years on a laptop in between songwriting and drumming for Grass Widow, Lillian Maring’s solo debut as Ruby Pins has the earnest quality of an artist creating for sheer personal fulfillment. Without the pressures of a record label or the expectations of fans, the target audience is her own peace of mind. Layered guitar work is laced with sweet yet haunting melodies, rounded out by an upbeat surf-pop sensibility. Since releasing those recordings in 2013, Maring has been playing shows with a rotating selection of friends and past bandmates. Although there are obvious similarities to Grass Widow, Ruby Pins is still clearly the product of intimate, singular expression rather than of three minds striving to figure it out together.
