[SOBER INDIE ROCK] "Too Much Too Soon," the opening tune from Michael Gross and the Statuettes' new Imaginary Signs EP, has just about everything you could want in an indie pop anthem: an angular, Cars-style guitar riff; Gross' boozy, Yorke-meets-Casablancas vocal delivery; a shiny, memorable chorus that reminds of Gin Blossoms-era rock radio. If "Gin Blossoms-era" strikes an odd chord in your heart, though, it should: The Statuettes have a definite safe streak that major-label prospectors ought to appreciate and music critics will see as lost potential. The band's rare combination of post-punk literacy and palatable rock gloss means the Statuettes could go just about anywhere from here: That's a lot to say for a band from Salt Lake City.

What's up with the backhanded comment "for a band from Salt Lake City"?  Seems a bit ignorant, actually.
