</p>[FADED BLUES] While one can’t quite credit Robert Cray for inventing modern blues, he played an enormous role in creating the modern-blues audience. <i>Strong Persuader</i>, his 1986 album, rose to an impossibly lucky No. 13 on the U.S. charts due to constant MTV rotation and dully contemporary tunes built around his trademark crisp guitar work. A decade earlier, while cast as a member of Otis Day’s band in <i>Animal House</i>, the then-Eugene resident led John Belushi to meet Curtis Salgado, form the Blues Bothers and forge the popular appreciation of the genre wholly divorced from context, which inevitably inspired House of Blues casino suites and demands to erase the cigarette from pictures of Robert Johnson. Cray, whose 16th studio album, <i>Nothin’ But Love</i>, has just been released, won several Grammys and continues to tour quite successfully.<p class="p1"></p><p></p>
