[ODD FUTURISTS] For a collective that earned its fervent cult by packaging youthful rebellion with assholish immaturity and peddling it to a nation of shithead teenagers (and the old music critics who enjoy living vicariously through them), Odd Future has produced a surprising amount of lightheaded, cosmopolitan R&B. There's Frank Ocean, of course, but also the jazzy production team the Jet Age of Tomorrow, and even figurehead {{cq}}Tyler, the Creator has stopped to smooth out his ADD horror stories on occasion (see: "She," from 2011's Goblin). Slinkiest of all is the Internet. Pairing Jet Age's Matt Martians with the crew's resident DJ—and lone female member—Syd the Kyd, the duo makes alluring, after-hours chill-out music, bathed in trip-hop, neo-soul and dark-hued synth-pop. Purple Naked Ladies, the band's 2012 debut, has the late-night throb of the Drive soundtrack, made gauzy by Syd's unexpectedly breathy vocals. In truth, it isn't so much the antithesis of the OFWGKTA aesthetic than a complement to the troupe's usual weed-and-Red Bull rush—the ideal music to help with the come-down from all that rape and murder.
