DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Vestibules and Portals, Laminates and Veneers: Objects and Constructed Paintings is a tediously overlong title for Mark R. Smith’s elegant show. Smith relies heavily on fabric in this buoyant celebration of surface and color. In works such as Slumping Pavillion, he gets overloaded on busy compositions, but in Museum Peripheral and the six-piece series In the Course of Forming an Aggregate Whole, he makes judicious use of negative space, imparting a pared-down, design-y feel. These are insouciant charmers, especially the empty, oversized frame entitled Open Cameo With Stand. With a visual sensibility this winning, Smith doesn’t need actual subject matter; he frames air itself with consummate aplomb. Nov. 1-Dec. 29.
