Don’t get me wrong, I love watching old commercials and videos of dogs doing silly things as much as anyone, and the democratization of the media that’s occurred thanks to Web 2.0 innovations such as YouTube and Twitter is, generally, a good thing. But democracy is always a double-edged sword: The same country that voted Barack Obama into office also gave us eight years of George W. Bush, and for every “David After Dentist,” we must suffer through something like Walk off the Earth. Like fellow insufferable faux-indie act Pomplamoose, the Canadian quintet impressed the slack-jawed masses with the videos of its cutesy, ukele-and-kazoo-intensive pop covers it uploaded to YouTube, particularly a version of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” played on a single acoustic guitar simultaneously by all five members. That’s all well and good, but now the band’s become a touring concern, with actual fans and everything. Even worse, Columbia gave them a record contract! What’s next, an album from the “Charlie Bit My Finger” kid? Walk off the Earth? If only we were so lucky.
