If you’ve already read past the title, it’s a good bet you’re 95 percent ready for the Northwest Film Center’s annual showcase of mini-movies that’ll get retrofitted as long-form American films. What you also know is that both programs—one all animation, one live-action—are going to be hit-or-miss, with both focused on the requisite tropes of voyeurism, whimsy and adults acting like children or children acting like adults, which you’ve come to expect from any shorts program, regardless of geographic origin. The animated reel is at least titillating in an experimental way, as when Chase imagines a Bond car chase rendered completely in triangles (it’s weirder than it sounds), Aaltrate transforms the human body (inside and out) into a mod kaleidoscope, or Edmond Was a Donkey takes Equus to Kafkaesque levels that would make Tim Burton jealous. Oh, and expect ample nudity and existentialism from both reels, though if you’re choosing between the two programs, you might want to consider your feelings about graphic teenage masturbation. But hey, it’s a French shorts reel, so if you're still reading, you probably already weighed that into the equation.
