Sheriff Dan Staton Will Get a Raise on the Way Out the Door

Multnomah County Salary Commission raises pay for Staton and other elected officials.

This week's big number: 8.9 percent.

That's the pay increase that Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton, who announced his resignation last week, will get if the Board of Commissioners approves pay increases proposed April 14 by the county's salary review commission.

The commission, made up of five human resources experts who don't work for the county, recommended raising Staton's salary from $154,381 to $168,093 a year as of July 1. His pay hike is coincidental. The county reviews salaries every two years, and this review, which is based on comparisons to peers rather than performance, just happened to come on the heels of months of bad news that led him to resign last Friday.

Staton's resignation is not effective until Aug. 16, 28 months before he was due to finish his term, so he'll get the pay raise for a month and a half, but a Public Employee Retirement System spokeswoman says he won't see much of a boost to his retirement benefit.
