The Brown Derby of Portland's strip scene, where the wood-paneled walls hold pinup shots of the girls who may or may not have once danced there, the murals of longshoremen and island girls glow in a nook, and the veteran little lady at the front door will stamp your hand while tucking her glasses into her blouse, and make an off-color joke about stuffing her bra. More than any other venue, Mary's has the tenor of a long-running stage show, and the dancers—many of whom are heartache beautiful—will take up a collection if they run out of ones for the jukebox. It's all very soothing, really.
