Widmer GASTHAUS
955 N Russell St., 281-3333, widmerbrothers.com, 11 am-10:30 pm Sunday-Thursday, 11 am-11 pm
Friday-Saturday.
You can get Widmer Hefeweizen anywhere. But there are two big reasons to swing by the Gasthaus. One is the brewery tour, a journey through the bowels of our city's largest brewery. The other is the Brothers' back catalog: Ginger Barrel-Aged Brrrbon, dry-hopped Double M.A.C. Pale Ale and Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout. These are the beers the brewers think about when hosing the brewhouse down for another round of Drop Top. The pub itself has comfort food with a heavy interest in all things Germanic (footlong Olympic Provisions frankfurter for $10, chicken schnitzel for $15). It's a madhouse come Oktoberfest. JOHN LOCANTHI.
DRINK THIS: Ginger Barrel-Aged Brrrbon. One of the first things you'll notice is the sediment floating around. That's the ginger. There's a lot of ginger. The ginger and bourbon ride along from nose to finish in this delightful winter beer.
