Beer Guide 2014: Hood River Day Sip

Double Mountain Brewery

8 4th St., Hood River, 541-387-0042, doublemountainbrewery.com.

If you're only familiar with Double Mountain's bottled standards, you'll gawk at the broad lineup of this downtown Hood River taproom, from big imperials and heavy Belgians to sours and barrel-aged pours. Expansive New Haven-style pies inspired by Apizza Scholls are the treat.

Full Sail

506 Columbia St., Hood River, 541-386-2247, fullsailbrewing.com.

Full Sail is best known for its crisp, clean lagers. This block-long stubby factory is about what you'd expect: big, clean equipment of European extraction with a taproom overlooking the whitecaps on the river below. You can sample Full Sail's most interesting beer at the Riverplace pilot brewery (see page 39), but if you're in Hood River it's worth a stop.

Pfriem Brewery

707 Portway Ave., Hood River, 541-321-0490, pfriembeer.com.

Pfriem's spacious Columbia frontage lies past Hood River's rejuvenated industrial district, by a bay in the vast river. The space caters to upper-middle-class Portlanders, with a simple menu of European-influenced pub fare (mussels, frites, ham-and-cheese sandwiches) and tap list of glorious homegrown Belgians, including our Beer of the Year (see page 10).

Logsdon Farmhouse

4785 Booth Hill Road, Hood River, 541-399-4659, farmhousebeer.com. Call for tours.

You know the painting of Mount Hood on Dave Logsdon's 750 milliliter masterpieces? Now you can drink in that view with those beers. My glass was even poured by the painter who created that label.

Solera Brewing

4945 SW Baseline Drive, Parkdale, 541-352-5500, solerabrewery.com.

This brewpub in the tiny town of Parkdale feels like a cozy meeting hall. There's an eclectic if abbreviated array of seasonal offerings, including a light, lemony sour known as Fez. It's a long drive, so look for the 3 percent ABV Berliner No Weisse, a sessionable sour. JORDAN GREEN.
