[BIG CRAFT] This mammoth brewpub opened in 2008, just as
the Great Recession was wiping out jobs and squashing incomes. People
lined up to experience the place anyway. There's a strong yuppie vibe at
this outpost of the Bend-based company, just as you'd expect in the
bustling Pearl. Sit at the bar and you might overhear a guy educating a
gal he just met on the finer points of a threesome. Nearby, there's a
guy from Toronto talking about the beer culture there—try finding that
on the eastside. Food choices are on the spendy side and the beer list
features Deschutes standards everyone knows and loves, along with
specialty and seasonal brews. Some of the small-batch beers are brewed
right here while others are shipped across the pass. All are
appropriately marked. Earth is 8,000 miles around at the equator, and
Deschutes distributes across 5,000 of those miles, from Hawaii to
Pennsylvania. The best thing about this perpetually packed pub is
finding something you'll never find outside these walls.
DRINK THIS: Find the Reserve Series section of the beer menu and order a snifter of the Dissident if it's on. A great alternative is the current rendition of Hop Henge, which is not to be missed.
