Bar Guide 2015: Blackbird Pizza

1935 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 236-5223, blackbirdpizzapdx.com. Noon-2 am daily.

While its name seems too reminiscent of the Beaumont wineshop or a bygone indie venue, at least Blackbird Pizza's trying something different with the locale Swift Lounge owners took over from Vincente's early this year. Retaining the crust and sauce that kept the pizzeria's faithful customers flocking through two decades of continual Hawthorne reinvention, new management lengthened the hours, expanded the menu to include sandwiches and pasta, and transplanted the aviary-themed, Mason-jar-poured "dranks"of its flagship establishment. If the opened floor plan's guiding aesthetic still feels uneasily torn between pool-pinball-foosball game room and mixology-fueled nightspot, repurposed church pews and a moose skull aren't a bad foundation for building character, and, amid a stretch of taverns advertising themselves as darkened retreats, glassed-in walls accommodate a welcome perch along the boulevard. Happy hour: 4-8 pm daily. Food specials, $1 off draft beers and wells.

Entertainment: Quizzy Wednesday, pool upstairs.
