Bar Guide 2015: Blue Diamond

2016 NE Sandy Blvd., 230-9590. 10:30 am-1 am Monday-Saturday, 5-10 pm Sunday.

At Blue Diamond—Portland's most excellent blues bar—almost all of the light comes from beer signs and video poker, and everyone is welcome. The bands range from Steve Miller blues to the venerable Mr. Lloyd Allen Sr. (though less often, now), more customers are on the dance floor than in the seats, and even in remarkably self-segmenting Portland almost nobody looks like each other. Come old, come young, come disheveled or besuited, come brown, white and black. You can honestly believe you've entered a Portland where age, race and money don't matter. The one punk-rock dude shows up and does a funny blues pogo, a woman dances all night with her father, and another kid in a bowler hat rolls in from the sidewalk with a bass in tow. Turns out the band is cool with letting him sit in. And he's pretty damn good—kind of like how you feel when you're here.

Happy hour: 4-7 pm daily. Fifty cents off drinks, food specials.

Entertainment: Music every night. Dancing every night—even during karaoke. Video poker.
