Bar Guide 2015: Deschutes Portland

210 NW 11th Ave., 296-4906, deschutesbrewery.com. 11 am-10 pm Sunday-Tuesday, 11 am-11 pm Wednesday-Thursday, 11 am-midnight Friday-Saturday.

This mammoth brewpub opened in 2008, just as the Great Recession was wiping out jobs and squashing incomes. People lined up to experience the place anyway. There's a strong yuppie vibe at this outpost of the Bend-based company, just as you'd expect in the bustling Pearl. Sit at the bar and you might overhear a guy educating a gal he just met on the finer points of a threesome. Nearby, there's a guy from Toronto talking about the beer culture there—try finding that on the eastside. Food choices are on the spendy side and the beer list features Deschutes standards everyone knows and loves, along with specialty and seasonal brews. Some of the small-batch beers are brewed right here while others are shipped across the pass. All are appropriately marked. Earth is 8,000 miles around at the equator, and Deschutes distributes across 5,000 of those miles, from Hawaii to Pennsylvania. The best thing about this perpetually packed pub is finding something you'll never find outside these walls.

Happy hour: 4-6 pm daily. Rotating $3.50 drafts and food specials.

Entertainment: TVs, tourists.
