Bar Guide 2015: Enso

1416 SE Stark St., 683-3676, ensowinery.com. 4-10 pm Monday-Thursday , 4-11 pm Friday, 1-11 pm Saturday, 1-10 pm Sunday.

Our 2014 Bar of the Year, Enso's Southeast Stark Street tasting room has nearly everything a wine bar should: thick, oaken serving trays, a garage door opening on sidewalk seating, thistle and lambs ear in vases and a parlor-style seating nook. Like its unique chandelier, bare light bulbs artistically draped from a tree branch above the curtained doorway to Ryan Sharp's urban winemaking production, Enso mixes rustic and refined. Italian olives ($4), Alma chocolates ($5) and Olympia Provisions with bread ($17) populate the simple menu. The small staff is friendly enough to serve you hearty pours and flights ($10), but won't hover. In back, Sharp's "human-sized" operation makes accessible blends for the everyday drinker. The wines ($6-$14) are inoffensive but not extraordinary, granted the bar's set high in the promised land of Willamette Valley winemaking. A short list of pints, one prosecco cocktail and a handful of outsider's wines sprinkle variety on the blackboard menu. It's this mix of easy-drinking wines and and unpretentious atmosphere that give Enso undeniable clout in the garagiste scene.

Happy hour: 4-6 pm. $1 off drinks and bread boards.
