Bar Guide 2015: Moloko

BARBAR

3967 N Mississippi Ave., 288-6272, molokopdx.com. 4 pm-2 am daily.

With its retro-futuristic white furniture, neon-lit fish tanks and wall of infused liquors and housemade spirits, Moloko initially gives off the impression of some postmodernist hipster hangout that L.A. barfed onto Mississippi Avenue. That sentiment, goes away pretty quickly thanks to the unpretentious bartenders who transform Moloko into a pretty comfortable spot. The heated patio out back is a rustic counterpoint to the Clockwork Orange shtick inside, and the cocktails provide some interesting nuances, among them the Thrillia in Vanilla ($11) with infused Campari and a pumpkin-based take on hot-buttered rum ($8). It's a hypnotic spot—the fish will do that to you—but for a place that looks like it might be the set of a Michael Bay movie from the outside, the comforts of Moloko are surprisingly earnest.

Happy hour: 4-7 pm daily. $1.50 draft Rainier, $3.50 wells, $4.50 fresh-squeezed wells, $5 wine and daily cocktails, $6 bloody marys and mimosas, $2 off sandwiches.

Entertainment: DJs, patio, fish watching.
